Ione was a graduate of Indiana University’s School of Business and she also received her Master’s Degree in Education from Butler University.  Ione was a 2nd Grade Teacher for IPS Schools and later moved to Miami where she taught English to 2nd grade refugee’s fleeing from Fidel Castro’s Cuba. In 1959, she frequently traveled to Cuba.

Later in life, Ione was an avid volunteer and philanthropist.  She was a classroom tutor for 20 years with Goodwill Industries, spent 25 years with the Children’s Bureau and 40+ years volunteering with the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Ione also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the IMA Alliance for her many years of exemplary service.

Beyond volunteering, Ione was a lifelong world traveler.  She traveled to Europe and once flew the Concord from New York to Paris.  She took the Orient Express through Asia, sailed the inaugural voyage of the Queen Mary 2, visited Zimbabwe, Africa, and enjoyed traveling to South America.  Ione frequently visited the Caribbean, with fond memories of the Dominican Republic where she owned a villa for 15 years on Pete Dye’s Casa de Campo Golf course.  When she wasn’t traveling, she enjoyed Gardening, Reading and Horse Racing. She was a former Golfer and member of Hillcrest Country Club, and a big fan of IU’s Men’s Basketball and Football. Ione was also a member of Northwood Christian Church for 60+ years.
